Albania has a Mediterranean climate, which in practice means hot dry summers, mild wet winters, and two shoulder seasons that most visitors underrate. The honest answer to when you should come is that it depends entirely on what you want the trip to be.

Summer: July and August

Hot, dry and busy. Daytime temperatures in Tirana regularly sit in the low-to-mid thirties, and the coast fills up — Albanians take their own holidays in August, so the beach towns are at their fullest exactly when foreign visitors arrive.

This is the right time if you want guaranteed sun, long evenings and a proper pool holiday. It is the wrong time if you want quiet, or if the group includes anyone who wilts in heat. Up in the hills above Tirana it is noticeably cooler than in the city centre, which is one of the reasons the villa fills fastest in these months. If you want summer dates, ask months ahead.

Late spring: May and June

Our favourite stretch, and the one we recommend most often. The countryside is still green rather than burnt, wildflowers are out, temperatures sit comfortably in the twenties, and the sea is warm enough to swim by June.

Crowds are thin, prices across the country are lower, and you can spend a full day walking without it becoming an endurance test. For hen weekends and family gatherings this is often the better choice than August — you get pool weather without the heat that pins everyone indoors at midday.

Early autumn: September and October

Arguably the best-value window. September still has summer weather with far fewer people, and the sea holds its warmth well into the month. October cools down but stays pleasant, and the light is beautiful.

This is the ideal season for retreats and walking trips — warm enough to run sessions outdoors, cool enough that nobody is uncomfortable.

Winter: November to March

Tirana winters are mild by northern European standards but wet, and the mountains get proper snow. This is not pool weather.

It suits city breaks, food, museums and a fire indoors. If your group is coming for the house rather than the outdoors — a company offsite, a writing retreat, a quiet family Christmas — winter is genuinely peaceful, and you will have the country largely to yourselves.

A quick way to choose

  • Pool holiday, guaranteed heat: July–August. Book early.
  • Best all-round balance: late May–June or September.
  • Best value and fewest people: late September–October.
  • Walking and the outdoors: May, June, September, October.
  • Quiet, indoor, focused: November–March.

Practical notes

Albania is not in the Schengen area, and many nationalities enter visa-free for stays of up to 90 days — check your own before booking. The currency is the lek, cards are widely accepted in Tirana, and cash is still useful in smaller towns.

Whenever you come, we can arrange airport transfers and a driver for the days you want to explore.
